Dagboek: Kees Wieringa (piano)

Friday September 8
We started our trip in Amsterdam. Almost we missed our plain in London because of a big delay of our plain from Amsterdam. The first thing I have bought at the tax-free shop in Amsterdam was a roll-piano, a very funny thing: a rubber roll with piano keys and as small electronic part with a synthesizer in it. I thought it would be maybe a problem in Hirado to practice on a piano.
Arriving in Hirado, my apartment (more a house) looks great. It is very big with two sleeping rooms and a big kitchen.

Saturday September 9
First thing I saw in my apartment was a kind of ‘bird spider’ so big as my hand. I am not afraid of Dutch spiders but this size frightened me very much. I asked one of the committee members Machida to look to the spider. He came and said: ‘Give him a name and he will be your friend’. I asked him if the spider was dangerous, he said it is not dangerous but he was also frightened to catch him. Later at the evening, after the welcome party I asked Alex to look to the spider. He catches the spider after a wild run and now, the spider is sitting under a pan. I leave him there. I have slept only for one our that night.

Sunday September 10
We had an opening of the studio of Alex. I have performed some short pieces on an electric piano. The sound was not good but for the moment it was okay.
Same public as at the welcome party. We had dinner in a very special restaurant, it is called ‘Hana’. The cook is very active and you can see how he prepare the dishes. Very good cooking, not expensive. So it will be not the last time to visit him.

Monday September 11
Meeting with the commitee to discuss all the workshops and concerts. Also meeting with the major of Hirado. Nice person. After the meeting I went to some temples, it was already dark, and made extremely nice recordings of crockes, all kind of sounds.
Now I am editing these sounds for my composition about Japan. When I look left I see some ‘kakkerlakken’ (Dutch for ‘cockroach’)on the ground of my appartment. I will kill them with my shoe. Good night, I say to myself.

Tuesday September 12
I had a meeting with the elementary school in Hirado about the coming of my two children to Hirado. They will go to school from September 25, every day! Without translation. Maybe it is cruel but it is an experiment. After the visit I have practice on the grand-piano of the cultural centre. It was great to feel a real piano after one week, it is like a woman. After practising we went with my translator Ymke to an elementary school, 93 children! It was a workshop and concert. Very nice children, not poisoned with computer, games and terrible toys like in the west but very pure people. I liked it very much. Already I have a painful neck because of the bad weather so i went to a massage place, not far from my house. They make my neck back to normal. After a pizza and a short walk I am now back in my great house and give all the greetings to my bird-spider in the kitchen who is still alive!

Wednesday September 13
We had a meeting with pianist Youriko and a friend of her. She asked for my favourite composer and I said Beethoven. Then she asked if I could play more tangos! After the meeting they asked us for lunch in a very luxurious restaurant. Alex and I couldn’t deny and it was big fun. At the end they asked us to pay for our selves! Still I don’t understand the Japanese people.
In the afternoon there was a jam session planned. There was a saxophone player asked me to play a song of the Carpenters. I said that I am a classical pianist but he couldn’t understand. After a short misunderstanding I gave a short presentation and in the evening we had a birthday party of a fisherman. We stay in his house in Nambu for sleeping. It was great, to be in such a place, far from everything.

Friday September 15
In the morning the fisherman asked us to join him on a trip on sea. This was a great experience! High waves and a small boat. I saw for the first time the coast of Hirado very clear. It is so beautiful!
After this trip we went back to Hirado island for a rest and in the evening I gave a concert in the Sake factory. The concert went very well. Also i did quatre-mains with a local pianist. She was very talented. After some sakes we went back to Hirado city.

Saturday September 16
Today I gave a serious piano lesson to the daughter of Yamaguchi. She is 16 years old and very talented. The only thing is that she has not enough influences from Europe and from the classical way of playing. I have told her so.
In the evening it was for me the most exciting evening of my stay here. We start for the second time the rehearsal for the Music Ensemble with musicians from very different backgrounds. It was not only fun, but very serious way of making music with the combination of holy temple music, choir, various Japanese instruments, wind instruments, percussion and some cowboys! We tried to make sound-scapes with only one or two notes. It was in my perception magic!\Tomorrow a free day, I will go to Nagasaki!

Sunday September 17
Early in the morning I depart from Hirado with Alex to Sasebo. We had heard about the typhoon but we took the risc and take the bus. When we arrived our friends from Hirado called us to come back to Hirado because the bridge would out of order in the afternoon. Alex went back, I wanted to visit a percussiongroup in Sasebo. They gave a wunderful concert in the Cultural Centre of Sasebo.
When i wanted to go back, indeed the bridge was closed to Hirado so I decided to take a hotel and stayed in Sasebo for one night during the typhoon.
It was a lot of rain, more than wind, the streets where full of water but nothing dangerous happened.

Monday September 18
We went to the island Oshima by boat. After a short tour around the beatiful island i joined a class at the junior highschool. The music teacher start to sing the school song with the children. After a short rest I start to practice in the huge sporthall anex converthall. I saw on the stage a taikodruk and ask the school if there was a musician who could play on the drum. The music teacher came to the hall and we tried to perform the Solodevildance of Simeon ten Holt for piano and druk! It was great and in the evening we gave the performance together for 250 listeners. In the night we went back to Hirado on a special boat, chartered by the commitee. A great day!

Tuesday September 19
End of the morning I went back to Hirado and take a little rest. I prepared my composition about Hirado. In the evening I was in Tabira and gave the workshop for the Ensemble. It was nice with swome local instruments. Especially two shakuhachi player I liked very much.

Wednesday September 20
A quiet day. I discovered the environment, went to the swimming pool, saw some temples and in the evening start with my karatelessons. It was a great experience, I am a beginner and trained with children. Very fanatic and serious. After the lesson a good meal in Hana restaurant.

Thursday September 21
In the morning I gave a lecture for the Rotary-club in Hirado. It was in a nice hotel. I talked about the community-thinking in Japan, when one person goes to the left, everybody will follow. In the Netherlands it is the opposite. It was also funny to speak about my work as a musician. After the lecture I went to the Hirado Elementary School for a great workshop. 93 children together! We danced on music of Simeon ten Holt, it was big fun and at the end I asked all the children to fall in sleep with a Nocturne of Chopin. Indeed, everybody was sleeping!
After the workshop I went to Fukuoka to pick up my family at the airport.

Friday September 22
This day we discovered Hirado with my family. Especially the smelling of fish is remarkable. My boys (seven and eight years old) like the playground at the top of the hill of Hirado. We eat fish in restaurant Hana together and after dinner I went to the cultural center Bunka to give the workshop about rhythm for the Ensemble. In the night it was difficult to sleep for my wife because of a jetlag.

Saturday September 23
Great day! We discovered a free bus in front of our house to Ranpu Hotel. There is a great beach. We all swim in the sea. After swimming we made a long walk in the mountains. At the end we drunk a coffee in the café of the Range, a manège with horses.

Sunday September 24
Today I will give an extra concert in a temple (Yuukou-ji, Hirado). It was a big operation too. The committee has to arrange everything in the temple, they had to bring a grand piano to the temple, arrange a setting for it. In the afternoon I went also to the temple and helped a little bit because I needed also amplifying. Machida-san is great, he arrange a very good PA. At the end of the afternoon Kadoja Shozan came to the temple. I had asked him because I like very much his playing of the shakuhachi. We did a good rehearsal and in the evening we performed together a piece called ‘For Cornelius’ of American composer Alvin Curran. It is one of my favourite pieces and it was magic! The atmosphere in the temple this evening was very special. A lot of crockes and a lot of people! I played after the intermission ‘Canto Ostinato’ of Simeon then Holt with a special system on my computer to simulate two piano’s. Again one of the highest points in Hirado! Thanks for the committee and the organizers Wil and Junko. This evening I will never forget in my life!

Monday September 25
Important day for my sons Winter (8) and Sem (7). It is the first school day for them. They went to the Elementary School of Hirado to grade 1 and 3. We are very excited about it. They got real ‘ransels’ of Mr. Inoui and we gave them tooth brushes because they needed on school! The school is so different from our school in Holland. The teachers look very nice and all the kids were very kind to our children. After school there was a rituel at Sakigata Shrine. Very beatiful with a lot of people from our part of Hirado city.

Tuesday September 26
This morning I did a very good workshop with the elementary school in Nakano. The principal is very nice, we talked about the Beatles. He told me that every teacher has to change of place every three years. Terrible. He said to me that is is a crazy system.
In the evening I was free and we eat in Japanese style in our fantastic house with my family. The organisation gave us a big house with two sleeping rooms and a living room. The house is situated near the harbor and we can see the sea!

Wednesday September 27
This morning Moos and myself went again to Nakano and gave a workshop together. It was again big fun. The whole school came to our workshop. They liked very much the way of working Moos did, with a lot of theatre in it.
After the schoolworkshop we went back to Hirado and picked up our children from elementary school. Winter likes the school very much but Sem don’t want anymore. No problem, we can understand, nobody speaks English and our children cannot speak Japanese. Again, everybody at the school is very kind to us.

Sunday October 1
In the morning we returned from Ikitsuki island and went directly to Tabira Church, an old catholic church. When I arrived the tuner was still busy with the piano. In the afternoon I gave a concert with a mix of styles, contemporary music of Cage, Feldman and Ten Holt. It was a good atmosphere. In the evening we were invited by Mr. Inoui in a sushi-bar and at night I was drunk.

Monday October 2
In the morning we went with my family to Nakano and Moos and I gave a workshop for the junior highschool. It was big fun. In 1 minute all the students (96!) were dancing and make music. Our children sitting in a corner of the hall and during the break many girls came to them and want to touch their hairs. So funny to see but my boys don’t like!

Tuesday October 3
Again we went to Nakano and for this workshop the whole junior high school was invited. Over 180 children came to the workshop. We did a combination of concert and workshop. We like to provocate a little bit to ask all the teachers to stay away from the students and seldom we need a translator. Without translation the contact with the students is much better.
In the evening we made Japanese food in our home with rice and fish.

Wednesday October 4
In the morning my son Winter had a fever, high tempeture. We went to the hospital and they want to give anti-biotica but I don’t like it. In Japan they use a lot of medicins.
This day my last karate lesson with my teacher Mr. Matshomoto. So pitty because I like this lessons very much. He is a very strong person and is happy that I join his lesson. He gave me alot of presents like t-shirts and posters. Also we made a nice picture with all the children of his karate school.
After this lesson there was another lesson of the very nice Iai sport, a kind of kendo. It is the favorit of Moos and she made a video of it.

Thursday October 5
Today we gave on the elementary school of Hirado a short presentation about our house in Holland and about the school of our boys. Also we did a short workshop with the children of the class of Winter.
The children have made drawings for our children. Again, everybody is so kind for us.
In the evening the last workshop with my ensemble. I am worried because every evening there are other members. So it is difficult to explain the rules of my music. Moos has joined with here dancers the rehearsal. I implementated some Japanese songs in my composition like ‘Taskehaja’. Especially the choir is very good and some individual singers. We decide to make 5 movements with soundscapes between the movements. The soundscapes are compilated of my recordings I made in Hirado.

Friday October 6
Our free day! We went to the Island Oshima and asked for a small boat trip on the Sea. It was very windy and the sea was very wild. It was great! We walked around the island but took one boat earlier back because Winter is still sick.
At the end of the afternoon I had a short rehearsel with the son of Machida and another wind player. We tried to find a way for the soundscapes in my composition. I decide to give the name ‘Kyi’ to my composition. We used this name a lot of times during my karate lessons.
In the evening we were invited by my karate teachers. He has organised a big party for us! Again we meet very nice persons. After going back we speak with our babysitter for a while. She likes to speak English with us, like so many people in Japan.
