Klaas Kamphuis (sculpture)



Klaas Kamphuis (39) is a visual artist. After some years of working as a traditional ship's carpenter he took an education in arts and sculpture at the Academy for Visual Arts in Kampen. Today he creates huge objects with the aid of an axe and a chain saw. His work can be seen in Holland, Germany, France, Austria, and Greece. Nowadays he lives on a houseboat outside of Amsterdam.

Summary of his 12xHolland activities

  • create a wooden object (height: 3,2 meters) with the axe. This object will be based on the Japanese character for ‘gate’ (Tôri). The sculpture will be made from local trees and placed at the Harbour Park in Hirado. At the presentation of this object the results of several workshops will be shown as well.
  • small exhibition of ‘Carpenter’s Tools in Japan and Holland’.
  • lecture ‘Living on a Boat’ at several schools.
  • workshops at several schools.
  • he will take shodo lessons (Japanese calligraphy) in Hirado.
