David van Ooijen (lute)

David van Ooijen (34) is lutist. He studied classical guitar with Hein Sanderink (Brabants Conservatorium, Tilburg), and lte with Toyohiko Satô (Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag). These days he participates as continuo-player in several ensembles like the Icarus Ensemble, Dopo Emilio, and Les Perruques d’Amsterdam. Regularly he also plays in opera productions as accompanist of singers, or as soloist. At the Festival of Vlaanderen he has played with the Toyohiko Satoh Lute Quartet; with the Giardino ensemble he has played at Wratislawa Cantans in Poland. In 1998 he won the Vriendenprijs of the Stichting Oude Muziek. David van Ooijen has recorded around 15 CD’s with different ensembles; he can be heard frequently on the radio. The BBC recorded several solo-performances. David van Ooijen teaches lute and Renaissance music at the school of music in Eindhoven. Both in Holland and abroad he organizes music courses with vocals and lute. David will come to Hirado with his Japanese wife Junko.

Summary of his 12xHolland activities:

  • concerts, both as soloist, and together with soprano Merel Ritz; with the instruments koto and shamisen.
  • mini-concerts, among others at the 12xCorner, the hospital and the home for elderly people.
  • choir concerts; he will rehears some old music pieces with the choir from Hirado.
  • workshop ‘Old Music’.
  • rehearse Merel Ritz’ musical ‘The Magic Pearl’ with the Hirado music ensemble ‘Wind Ago’.
  • he will take shamisen lessons (Japanese banjo) in Hirado.
